Series Two Introduction - The Way of the Gospel
Series Two – The Way of the Gospel
How then shall His children live?
This second series explores that question.
In Series One, MacDonald revealed the Father's heart through
the life of Jesus Christ. Here he turns our attention to the Way of that Life.
The Gospel is never merely a way of thinking. It is something to enter into, participate
in, and live within. No doctrine or theory can produce this Life. Jesus alone
is the Way.
The greatest hindrance to this Life is not our weakness but
our slavery to the tyranny of "things." The outer life, with its
possessions, ambitions, control, and self-sufficiency, quietly competes with
the inner Life of relationship and love. Whether our hearts are captured by
what we possess or by what we long to have, we become servants of the temporary
while forgetting the Eternal. It is spiritual stupidity to believe our heavenly
Father will not provide what His children need.
Yet even here, the Father's relentless love is at work.
MacDonald teaches us that every difficulty, every
disappointment, and every storm can be seen as an assault in the siege of Love
upon our selfishness. Nothing that comes from the Father's hand is outside His
purpose in awakening us. Prayer, therefore, becomes far more than asking for
help. It is the growing conversation and communion of children with their
Father. Its highest purpose is not to receive what we desire but to reach the
place where we desire nothing more than God Himself.
Throughout these sermons, MacDonald reminds us that our
Father makes no plans without regard to us, His children. He leaves room for
our participation. He invites rather than compels. For the irreducible Truth of
God is relationship. Light as doctrine blinds us, but as guidance it shines
upon the path we are called to walk. In following Jesus, we gradually discover
that obedience is not the loss of freedom but its fulfillment. Self-denial is
not the rejection of life’s good, but the surrender of the false self that
keeps us from our true one.
This is the Way.
It is the way of prayer and of trust. The way of surrender
rather than control. The way of fairness, mercy, and self-giving love. The way
that teaches us to call upon God as "Abba, Father," not merely with
our lips but from hearts awakened to His goodness. Their goodness extends
beyond what we can see, imagine, and conceive and beyond what our hearts could
want. It is the path where every hardship, every joy, and every unanswered
question becomes another invitation to walk more closely with Them.
As you read these sermons, resist the temptation to search
for methods or formulas. Walk the path slowly. Let each step prepare you for
the next. MacDonald was never interested in giving us a better religious
system. He wanted us to know the living Christ and to discover that His Life
becomes our own only as we walk with Him.
By the end of this second series, my hope is not simply that
you admire the Way Jesus taught.
It is that, with Him, you begin to walk it.
